The clinical fellowship (CF) is the mentored, paid experience that sits between your graduate degree plus a passing Praxis 5331 score and your CCC-SLP. ASHA sets a floor of 1,260 hours across a minimum of 36 weeks of full-time work — roughly 35 hours per week. Working more hours per week does not let you finish before 36 weeks; the calendar minimum and the hour minimum both have to be satisfied.
At least 80% of those hours must be direct clinical contact: screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and caregiver/family education tied to specific clients. Staff meetings, paperwork time not attached to a session, and general in-services fall in the other 20%. Fellows in school settings are the most likely to drift under 80% because of IEP meetings and travel between buildings — which is exactly what the direct-percentage readout above is for.
The fellowship is reviewed in three segments. In each segment, your mentoring SLP must complete at least 6 hours of direct observation and 6 hours of indirect monitoring (record review, conferences, correspondence). Track those separately with your mentor — missing supervision hours is the most common reason a segment has to be redone.
Part-time fellowships are permitted, but ASHA sets a minimum weekly commitment and extends the required calendar length proportionally. If you are working under 35 hours a week, confirm your plan with your mentor and your state board before you begin, since state licensure clocks do not always match ASHA's.
This tool is a planning aid, not an official record. Always confirm current requirements against the ASHA Certification Standards and your state licensing board, and keep your official CF Report and Rating Form signed and current.
