Norms for consonant acquisition differ between studies because they use different mastery criteria (75% vs. 90% of children), different word positions, and different dialect samples. The ages here reflect the widely used ~90% criterion and are meant as a screening reference, not a diagnostic cutoff. A single sound in error at the edge of its window is far less concerning than reduced intelligibility, an atypical error pattern such as backing, or inconsistent errors that vary from trial to trial.
When you screen, always pair the chart with three things: a connected speech sample (not just single words), stimulability testing to see whether the child can produce the sound with a cue, and an oral mechanism exam to rule out structural or motor contributions. Those three data points do more to separate a delay from a disorder than any age chart.
