Start with the contract year, not the salary. School positions are usually 38-42 weeks. Medical settings pay across 52 weeks minus PTO. A school salary that looks 20% lower can be equal or better per hour worked — and it comes with a summer you can use for PRN work, travel contracts, or nothing at all.

Count the hours you will really work. Paid hours and worked hours diverge fastest in school and SNF settings: unpaid documentation, IEP season, and productivity requirements above 85% all shrink your true hourly rate. If a setting expects evening paperwork, add those hours to the weekly figure above and rerun the numbers.

Price the non-salary line items. CEU stipends, ASHA dues and state license reimbursement, mileage for itinerant caseloads, laptop and materials budgets, and retirement match are real money. For a CF, a structured mentorship with a supervisor who actually has time is worth more than a few thousand dollars in base pay.

Adjust for where you will live. Salary differences between states largely track cost of living. A California offer that is 25% higher than an Ohio offer can leave you with less disposable income once housing is priced in — which is what the adjusted hourly figure in this tool is showing you.

Then weigh what the math cannot show. Caseload size, population, supervision quality, commute, and whether the setting builds the skills you want in five years. A first job that makes you a strong dysphagia clinician can be worth more over a career than a higher CF salary.
