Every US state — including New York — accepts the Praxis 5331 at the ASHA-set 162 cut score for SLP licensure. There is no separate state-specific SLP Praxis exam.
Licensing board
New York is unusual in that professional licenses are administered by the State Education Department rather than a health department. The Praxis 5331 at 162 satisfies NYSED's Part 75 examination requirement, and school-based SLPs additionally hold Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) certification.

The New York SLP market
New York licenses Speech-Language Pathologists through the State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which oversees more than 50 licensed professions. New York is one of the largest SLP markets on the East Coast, with dense hiring in New York City metro schools, Long Island districts, and the state's hospital systems — and Praxis 5331 at 162 is the exam every New York SLP takes.

Passing score note: New York accepts the standard ASHA 162 passing score on Praxis 5331. There is no New York-specific test.
New York issues a Limited Permit that lets you complete the Clinical Fellowship year in New York under a licensed supervisor. You apply for the Limited Permit after graduation and passing Praxis 5331, work supervised for the CF year, then apply for the full license.
The Limited Permit is valid for one year and can be extended once. NYSED processing is slower than most states — allow 8-12 weeks for the Limited Permit application, and don't book any pre-employment paperwork on a tighter timeline.
To work in a New York public school, SLPs need both the NYSED SLP license AND the Teaching Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) certificate. The TSSLD requires the same graduate coursework as licensure plus a state-approved teacher-preparation program component (most CAA-accredited NY programs bundle this).
The 162 Praxis 5331 satisfies the content-area exam requirement for TSSLD. You'll also take the edTPA (or the workforce-based alternative) as the state's teacher performance assessment.
The NYC Department of Education is the single largest SLP employer in the state. Starting DOE SLP pay is roughly $70K-$78K, rising to $120K+ with a master's + 30 credits and 15+ years. Many NYC SLPs supplement DOE salaries with per-diem work at Committee on Preschool Special Education evaluations ($90-$140 per evaluation).
Contract therapy agencies (Presence, Metro Therapy, All About Kids) pay $70-$95/hour for licensed SLPs and dominate hiring for suburban district contracts. Hospital-based positions at NYU Langone, Mount Sinai, and Northwell tend to sit at $85K-$110K base with strong benefits.

Do New York SLPs take a different Praxis test?
No. Praxis 5331 with a 162 passing score is the exam for New York SLP licensure.
How long does NYSED take to process an SLP application?
8-12 weeks for the Limited Permit, another 8-10 weeks to convert to the full license after the CF. Applications with missing documents can double that timeline.
Can I work in NYC public schools with just the SLP license?
No — you also need the NYSED TSSLD certificate to work in a K-12 public school. Private schools, hospitals, and clinics only require the SLP license.
Is the NYC DOE the best-paying SLP job in the state?
Long-term yes — the salary schedule reaches $120K+ with a pension. Short-term, hospital or private-agency work often pays more in the first 5 years. Many NYC SLPs move to the DOE after building experience elsewhere.
Earn a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology
Complete a graduate program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) — the near-universal requirement across US jurisdictions.
Pass the Praxis 5331 with a score of 162 or higher
The Speech-Language Pathology Praxis (5331) is the single national exam accepted by all state boards. 162 is the ASHA-set passing score and every state uses that same cut score.
Complete a Clinical Fellowship (CF)
A 36-week (9-month full-time equivalent) mentored clinical experience under a licensed CCC-SLP. Some states use their own name for it (California calls it the RPE) but the requirement is functionally equivalent.
Submit fingerprints and a background check
Standard across all state boards. Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks and must be completed before the license is issued.
Apply to the state licensing board
Send your Praxis score (ETS score report), transcripts, CF verification, and background clearance to the state board. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam on state SLP practice law.
