The GFTA-3 tells you which sounds are wrong. The Khan-Lewis Phonological Analysis, Third Edition (KLPA-3) takes the same Sounds-in-Words responses and codes them into phonological processes such as fronting, stopping, cluster reduction, and final consonant deletion. A child producing 'tup' for 'cup,' 'tea' for 'key,' and 'do' for 'go' does not have three unrelated errors; they have velar fronting, and treating the pattern is more efficient than treating each phoneme.
Exam items and clinical supervisors alike expect you to choose a phonological approach — cycles, minimal pairs, complexity-based targets — when errors cluster into patterns, and a traditional motor approach when a small number of isolated sounds are in error.
Dialect and scoring integrity
Productions consistent with a speaker's dialect or with the phonology of their first language are differences, not disorders. Scoring 'des' for 'desk' as a final cluster reduction error in a speaker of African American English inflates severity and can drive an inappropriate eligibility decision. Best practice is to score dialect-consistent forms as correct, document the rationale, and rely on stimulability and intelligibility data.
