First-Year SLP Advice: 8 Tips for a Strong Start
Your first year as an SLP is about building systems, not being perfect. Here are 8 tips to start strong.
Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.
Your first year as an SLP is a mix of excitement, imposter syndrome, and a steep learning curve. Whether you are in a school, hospital, or clinic, the goal of year one is not to be perfect. It is to build systems, find good mentors, and learn from your mistakes without burning out.
1. Protect your supervision time
If you are in your CF, supervision is not optional and it is not a distraction from "real work." It is the real work. Schedule your supervision sessions in advance, come prepared with cases, and document them. If your employer does not protect that time, advocate for it firmly.
2. Build documentation systems early
Documentation will take more time than you expect. Create templates for common note types — evaluation reports, progress notes, IEPs, and treatment plans. Block time on your calendar for notes every day. Falling behind on documentation creates stress that bleeds into everything else.
3. Ask questions before you pretend to know
No one expects a new SLP to know everything. The dangerous move is pretending you do. When you encounter something outside your competence — complex dysphagia, a device you have not programmed, a legal question — ask your supervisor or a colleague. Patient safety and your license depend on it.
4. Set boundaries with your caseload
In your first year, you may want to say yes to everything. That is a fast path to burnout. Know your contract hours, your expected workload, and what is reasonable for your experience level. Track your time honestly and push back when assignments exceed what you can do well.
5. Find one peer mentor outside your workplace
Your CF supervisor is essential, but a peer mentor can offer a different kind of support. Look for someone one or two years ahead of you who remembers what it feels like to be brand new. Online SLP communities, state associations, and former classmates are good places to start.
6. Focus on relationships, not just paperwork
Therapy happens through trust. The teachers, nurses, aides, and parents you work with are your partners. Spend time building those relationships. It will make your job easier and your outcomes better.
7. Keep learning, but not everything at once
You cannot become an expert in every disorder in your first year. Pick one or two areas you want to grow in and pursue those intentionally. Over time, your competence expands naturally.
8. Plan your CCC-SLP timeline
Know the deadlines for your CF hours, your ASHA application, and your state license. Start collecting documents early so you are not scrambling at the end.
