The ASHA CCC-SLP Application: Documents, Order & Delays

The ASHA CCC-SLP application is the final administrative step of a seven-year path — and the one most likely to stall over a missing transcript or an unsigned form. Here's exactly what ASHA needs, in what order, and where applications get delayed.

What the CCC-SLP actually is

The Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology is a national, voluntary credential from ASHA. It is not a license — states license you to practice. But most employers require the CCC, many state licenses reference ASHA standards, and Medicare reimbursement rules effectively assume it. In practice it's non-optional.

The four requirements

1. Degree: a master's, doctoral, or other recognized post-baccalaureate degree from a CAA-accredited program.
2. Academic and clinical practicum: the required coursework across the nine Big Nine areas, plus 400 supervised hours (375 direct + 25 observation).
3. Praxis 5331: a score of 162 or higher, reported directly to ASHA.
4. Clinical Fellowship: 1,260 hours over at least 36 weeks with a CCC-SLP mentor, documented on the CF Report and Rating Form.

Documents to gather before you start

• Official transcript showing your degree was conferred — sent from the university directly to ASHA.
• Praxis score report — designate ASHA (recipient code 5031) when you register, or order an additional report later. This is the single most common delay.
• Clinical Fellowship Report and Rating Form, signed by you and your mentor.
• Your mentor's ASHA account number, verifying an active CCC for the entire fellowship.
• Application fee plus ASHA membership dues (certification-only is available at a different rate).

The order that avoids delays

1. Before you graduate: designate ASHA as a Praxis score recipient. Adding it later costs money and days.
2. At graduation: request the official transcript with the degree conferral date. A transcript sent before conferral will be rejected.
3. During the CF: log hours and supervisory activities monthly, not at the end.
4. Final month of the CF: pre-fill the CFRF and get your mentor's calendar time booked.
5. After the CF ends: submit online through ASHA's certification portal.

How long approval takes

When every document is on file, review typically completes within a few weeks. Applications missing a piece go into a hold state and only move again once the item arrives — so the practical timeline is driven by your slowest document, usually the transcript or the score report.

The Big Nine coursework check

ASHA verifies that your graduate coursework covered the nine areas: articulation; fluency; voice and resonance; receptive and expressive language; hearing; swallowing; cognitive aspects of communication; social aspects of communication; and communication modalities (AAC). Accredited programs build this in, so gaps mostly appear for internationally trained applicants — see the international SLP pathway.

Where applications get rejected

• Mentor's CCC lapsed mid-fellowship. Verify their status at the start and the end.
• Under 36 weeks. Hitting 1,260 hours in 30 weeks doesn't count — the calendar minimum is independent.
• Under 80% direct contact. Heavy admin or supervision-of-assistants time can pull you below the threshold.
• Supervisory activities clustered. Each third of the fellowship needs its own observations.
• Score sent to the wrong recipient. A state board copy is not an ASHA copy.

State license vs. CCC — do both

The CCC is national and portable; the license is state-specific and legally required to practice. Apply for both. Requirements, fees, and jurisprudence exams vary by jurisdiction — look up your state board's checklist. If you'll work across state lines, check the ASLP-IC compact.

Keeping the CCC after you get it

Certification maintenance requires 30 professional development hours (3.0 CEUs) every three years, including at least 1 hour of ethics and 2 hours in cultural competency/DEI as of the current standards, plus annual dues. Details in our recertification guide.
