Clinical Fellowship Interview Tips: Choosing the Right CF Supervisor

A Clinical Fellowship interview is different from a typical job interview. You are not just being hired as an SLP — you are being matched with a mentor who will shape your first 1,260 hours of supervised practice. The interview is bidirectional: they are evaluating you, and you are evaluating whether the setting and supervisor will support your growth toward CCC-SLP.

What employers want to know

CF supervisors are looking for candidates who are coachable, self-aware, and ready to learn. They expect gaps in clinical knowledge — that is the point of the fellowship — but they want to see that you know how to find answers, ask for help, and reflect on your work.

• "Why do you want to complete your CF here?"
  Be specific about the setting, the population, or the mentorship structure. Avoid generic answers like "I need my CF hours."
• "Describe a challenging case from your externship."
  Choose a case that shows your clinical reasoning, how you collaborated, and what you learned. It is okay to say you would do something differently now.
• "How do you handle feedback?"
  Show that you view feedback as part of professional growth. Give an example of a time you implemented a supervisor's suggestion and improved your practice.

What you should ask the supervisor

The quality of your CF supervisor matters more than almost anything else in your first year. Ask these questions to assess fit:

• How are supervision hours structured? Direct vs. indirect, weekly schedule, individual vs. group supervision.
• What is your approach to feedback and mentorship? You want someone who is accessible and honest, not just a signature on a form.
• What caseload or workload will I carry? A high caseload with poor support is a fast track to burnout.
• How does the setting support the CF requirements? Ask about the ASHA CF experience hours, mentoring activities, and documentation.
• What happens if I need to extend my CF? Life happens. A good supervisor has a plan for delays.

Red flags to watch for

• Supervisor is rarely available. You need at least the minimum direct and indirect supervision hours; more is better early on.
• No protected documentation or supervision time. If the expectation is to see clients all day and document on your own unpaid time, that is a warning sign.
• Vague answers about mentorship. "You'll figure it out" is not a supervision philosophy.
• Pressure to start before you are ready. You should be able to begin your CF after your degree is conferred and your supervisor is approved.

How to show you are ready

Bring a short list of your clinical strengths and areas you want to grow in. Employers respect self-awareness more than a candidate who claims to be ready for everything. Mention that you are eager to learn documentation, billing, and interdisciplinary collaboration — the skills that CFs are designed to teach.
