Praxis Path vs. Mometrix: Which 5331 Prep Is Actually Worth It?
Mometrix is the cheap, ubiquitous option. Praxis Path is the SLP-specific one. Here's an honest side-by-side — including where Mometrix is the better pick.
Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.
If you've spent ten minutes Googling Praxis 5331 prep, you've seen Mometrix. Their study guide and flashcard set rank at the top of Amazon, and their YouTube channel is everywhere. Praxis Path is newer, narrower, and built specifically for the SLP exam by clinicians. Here's an honest, side-by-side look at how the two compare — including where Mometrix is the better choice.
Quick verdict
- Pick Mometrix if you prefer a printed book you can highlight, you're a heavy passive-reading studier, and you want the cheapest possible entry point (~$30 for the guide).
- Pick Praxis Path if you want SLP-specific clinical depth, 400+ application-style practice questions with rationales, a full-length timed mock exam, and spaced-repetition flashcards — all in one platform for $49.

Where Mometrix shines
Mometrix's content review is genuinely solid for a generalist test-prep publisher. If you learn best by reading dense paragraphs, highlighting, and writing in margins, the printed book has obvious appeal. It's also the cheapest serious option on the market — you can buy the guide for less than a textbook chapter.
Where Mometrix falls short for the 5331
- Recall over application. Most Mometrix questions ask you to recognize a definition. The actual 5331 is overwhelmingly clinical scenario-based — "a 68-year-old presents with…" — and recognition practice doesn't transfer.
- Light on dysphagia and adult neuro. These are the two areas that trip up the most graduates (especially from pediatric-leaning programs), and Mometrix treats them at the same depth as everything else. See our dysphagia study guide for what the exam actually expects.
- No real mock exam. Mometrix sells additional practice tests separately, but none replicate the full 132-question, 2.5-hour timed format that stamina-trains you for test day.
- Not written by SLPs. Mometrix produces guides for hundreds of exams. Quality is decent, but you can tell when the author hasn't actually treated a patient with aphasia.
Why Praxis Path was built differently
Praxis Path is 100% focused on the 5331. Every module, question, and flashcard was written by practicing SLPs and reviewed against the current ETS test specifications. You get clinical reasoning practice — not "which of these is the definition of aphasia" — plus a full-length mock exam, spaced-repetition flashcards that surface your weak spots, and a downloadable PDF guide for offline review.
Our recommendation
If your budget is truly $30 and you have months of study time, the Mometrix guide is fine as a starting content review — but plan to supplement it with application questions and a real mock exam from somewhere. If you want one tool that takes you from content review through test-day-ready in 8 weeks, Praxis Path is purpose-built for that. Pair it with our 8-week study plan and you have a complete prep system for less than a single Mometrix bundle plus separate practice tests.
