The Best Free Praxis SLP Practice Tests and Study Resources

There's a surprising amount of high-quality free 5331 prep out there if you know where to look. Here's the curated list — plus what to skip.

Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.

You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars to pass the Praxis 5331. There's a surprising amount of high-quality free SLP prep out there if you know where to look — and an even larger amount of low-quality, outdated material that wastes your time. Here's the curated list.

Free practice questions

  • ETS Praxis Study Companion (5331) — the official free prep PDF. Includes test specifications, sample questions with rationales, and the exact content outline ETS uses to write items. Start here. Always.
  • ETS Interactive Practice Test (free portion) — a small set of official-style questions before the paid version kicks in. Worth doing for the format exposure.
  • University clinic study guides — many graduate programs publish internal Praxis review packets. Search "Praxis 5331 study guide site:.edu" — you will find PDFs from real SLP departments.

Free study content & explanations

  • SpeechPathology.com free CEUs — many on-demand courses (CEUs aside) are free to access and cover Praxis-relevant topics: dysphagia, AAC, aphasia subtypes, voice.
  • ASHA Practice Portal — the gold standard. Free, searchable, and aligned with what ETS considers "best practice." Use it to verify any questionable answer rationale you find elsewhere.
  • ASHA Leader articles — searchable archive of clinical and research summaries. Excellent for evidence-based practice questions.

Free podcasts

  • SLP Nerdcast — clinical depth, often EBP-focused, with show notes that double as study guides.
  • Swallow Your Pride — dysphagia-focused. If your program was light on adult medical, this is must-listen prep.
  • The Speech Source — pediatric-focused, useful for early intervention and language development items.

Free flashcards

  • Quizlet — search "Praxis 5331" and you'll find dozens of community decks. Quality varies wildly. Verify any clinical content against ASHA Practice Portal before memorizing.
  • Anki — slightly steeper learning curve, but spaced-repetition flashcards are dramatically more effective than passive re-reading. Look for shared decks on the AnkiWeb shared deck library.

Free reference material worth bookmarking

  • IDDSI framework site (iddsi.org) — free, official diet-level definitions. Memorize the levels.
  • ASHA Code of Ethics — free PDF on asha.org. Skim it twice. Items on ethics are essentially free points if you've read the actual document.
  • Brown's morphemes summary — multiple free university handouts available; pick one and stick with it.

What to skip

  • Unverified Reddit answer keys. Common to find threads claiming "the right answer to this question is X." Often wrong.
  • Outdated PDFs (pre-2014 dysphagia content especially). The IDDSI framework, the EBP base, and the diagnostic criteria have all updated.
  • Generic Praxis Core prep. Different exam entirely. Don't waste a minute on it.

When free isn't enough

Free resources work great for content review and definitional knowledge. Where they consistently fall short is in application-style practice questions with well-written rationales — the format that actually mirrors the 5331. If you've burned through the free question banks and still aren't confident on clinical vignettes, that's the gap a structured course is designed to fill. Pair what you find here with our content-area breakdown and the dysphagia guide.
