Why a Praxis SLP practice test is the highest-ROI study move

First-time passers of the Praxis 5331 tend to do one thing differently: they take at least one full-length practice test before they think they're ready — not after. Here's why that matters.

Diagnose weak content areas early

A single 132-question mock in week 1 tells you exactly where your gaps are — usually not what you'd guess from grad school memory alone.

Train pacing and stamina

150 minutes with no scheduled break is its own skill. Timed practice under real conditions is the only way to build it before test day.

Learn the scenario style

The 5331 rewards clinical reasoning, not recall. Practice items with written rationales teach you to see the pattern the test uses.

Convert to a scaled score you trust

Percent-correct means nothing until you convert it to the 100–200 scale. Use our calculator so you know if you're actually at 162.

Content mix of the Praxis SLP practice test

Both the free set and the full-length mock follow the ETS category weights so your practice score is a fair predictor of the real thing.

Foundations & Professional Practice

44%

Anatomy & physiology of speech/hearing mechanisms, cranial nerves, normal development, research design, ASHA scope of practice, ethics, and cultural-linguistic considerations.

Screening, Assessment, Evaluation & Diagnosis

33%

Standardized and dynamic assessment, instrumental evaluations (MBSS, FEES, videostroboscopy), differential diagnosis across the ASHA Big 9, and interpreting standardized scores.

Planning, Implementation & Evaluation of Treatment

23%

Evidence-based intervention selection, goal writing, data collection, dosage/intensity, discharge criteria, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

How to score a Praxis SLP practice test

You need a scaled score of 162 on the 100–200 scale to pass. ASHA sets that cutoff and every US state board accepts it.

Because ETS uses equating, raw scores (how many of 132 you got right) map to a scaled score in a slightly different way each form. As a rule of thumb, expect to need 85–95 correct out of 132 to land at or above 162.

Plug your practice-test raw score into our Praxis score calculator to get an honest estimate of where you'd sit on the real exam — not a "you're doing great!" percent-correct.

How to use the practice test through your prep

  1. 1

    Week 1 — Diagnostic run

Take the free 20 or the full mock cold. Don't cram. The goal is a baseline and a list of weak content areas, not a good score.

  2. 2

Weeks 2–5 — Drill weak areas

Study the modules that map to your lowest domain and drill scenario-style questions daily. Read every rationale, even on the ones you got right.

  3. 3

    Weeks 6–7 — Retake wrong-only mode

Paid members can retake just the questions they missed. Fastest way to close gaps without re-drilling material you've already mastered.

  4. 4

Week 8 — Timed full mock

Sit the full 132-question mock in one 150-minute block, no breaks. Score 165+ and you're ready for test day.

Praxis SLP practice test FAQ

Is there a free Praxis SLP practice test?
Yes. Praxis Path offers a free 20-question Praxis 5331 SLP practice test with written rationales. It's untimed, mobile-friendly, and requires no signup. Paid members unlock the full 132-question, timed mock exam plus 400+ additional questions.
How many questions are on the real Praxis 5331 exam?
132 multiple-choice questions in 150 minutes (2 hours 30 minutes). That's about 68 seconds per question. Our full-length mock uses the same length and timing so your pacing translates directly to test day.
How closely does the practice test match the real Praxis SLP?
Every practice question is written to the current ETS blueprint's three content categories (Foundations & Professional Practice 44%, Screening/Assessment/Evaluation 33%, and Planning/Implementation of Treatment 23%) and mirrors the scenario-style clinical reasoning ETS uses. It is not an official ETS exam — no third-party prep is.
What raw score do I need on a practice test to be on track to pass?
You need a scaled score of 162 to pass. On a realistic 132-question form that maps to roughly 85–95 correct answers. Use our Praxis score calculator to convert your raw practice-test score into an estimated scaled score.
Should I take the practice test timed or untimed?
Both, at different stages. Untimed early in prep to learn the format and read rationales without pressure. Timed in the final two weeks, in one 150-minute sitting, to build pacing and stamina — the real test has no scheduled break.
Can I retake the practice test?
Yes, as many times as you want. Paid members can also retake only the questions they got wrong, so review time stays focused on weak spots instead of re-drilling material they already know.
