School SLP Jobs: What the Role Actually Involves in 2026

School-based practice employs more speech-language pathologists than any other setting. If you're finishing grad school, studying for the Praxis, or moving out of medical work, here's what the job actually looks like day to day — and what to ask before you sign a contract.

What a school SLP actually does

• Evaluations and re-evaluations on a three-year cycle, plus initial referrals from the child study / MTSS team.
• IEP writing and meetings — goals, present levels, service minutes, progress reporting each grading period.
• Direct therapy, usually in small groups of two to four, pushed into class or pulled out.
• Consultation with teachers on classroom supports, AAC implementation, and curriculum access.
• Medicaid billing and documentation in districts that bill for school health services.

Eligibility is not the same as diagnosis

This is the single biggest adjustment for clinicians coming from medical settings, and it shows up on the Praxis too. Under IDEA, a student qualifies for school services when the communication impairment adversely affects educational performance and requires specially designed instruction. A child can have a real articulation difference and still not qualify. Educational relevance — not a test score alone — drives eligibility.

Credentials you'll need

• Master's degree from a CAA-accredited program.
• A passing Praxis 5331 score (states set the cut score; ASHA requires 162).
• State SLP license, a state department of education certificate, or both, depending on the state.
• ASHA CCC-SLP is optional in some districts but often carries a stipend.

Requirements vary widely — check your state licensure requirements before you apply, especially if you're crossing state lines.

Pay, calendar, and the tradeoffs

School SLPs are typically on a teacher salary schedule: fewer contract days than a medical job, steps for years of service and degree, a pension in most states, and summers unpaid unless you pick up extended school year (ESY) work or private clients. Hourly-equivalent pay often beats the headline salary, but raises are slower than in medical settings, where per-diem and travel rates are higher.

Caseload is the question to ask in the interview

Ask for the current caseload number, not the state cap. Ask how many evaluations the previous SLP completed last year, whether the district uses a workload model, whether there is an SLPA, and who covers when an SLP is out. First-year survival

• Build a scheduling template before students arrive; protect evaluation and paperwork blocks in writing.
• Group by goal area, not by grade, wherever the schedule allows.
• Use data sheets you can complete during the session, not after.
• Learn the district's compliance calendar — missed timelines are the main source of stress.
• Find the veteran SLP in your district and ask for their eligibility paperwork templates.

If you're still pre-license

School districts hire early, often before the Praxis score posts. Get the exam done in the fall of your final year if you can — it removes the biggest contingency from your offer.
