ASHA CEU Requirements vs. State License Renewal

Two separate clocks run on every practicing SLP: ASHA certification maintenance for the CCC-SLP, and state license renewal. They use different units, different cycles, and different approved-provider rules. Missing either one can stop you from working.

ASHA certification maintenance

• Professional development is completed in three-year maintenance intervals.
• ASHA counts 30 certification maintenance hours, equivalent to 3.0 ASHA CEUs, per interval.
• A portion must address ethics, and ASHA has added a cultural competency / DEI requirement to recent intervals.
• Annual certification fees must be current; lapsed dues can suspend certification independently of your hours.
• ASHA audits a random sample — keep certificates for at least the length of the interval plus the following one.

State license renewal is separate

Most states renew every one or two years and require their own contact hours, often with mandated topics: ethics, human trafficking awareness, child abuse reporting, suicide prevention, cultural competency, or jurisprudence, depending on the state. Some states accept ASHA CEUs automatically; others require board-approved providers or cap self-study. Where to earn hours without overspending

• Employer-funded in-services and grand rounds that carry approved-provider status.
• State association conferences — usually the cheapest per hour and satisfy state-specific topics.
• ASHA Learning Pass and journal self-studies for flexible asynchronous hours.
• Supervising students or clinical fellows, which counts in some states.
• Presenting or publishing, which frequently earns hours in both systems.

A system that prevents the last-minute scramble

1. Write both deadlines — ASHA interval end and state renewal — in your calendar with a 90-day reminder.
2. Keep one cloud folder per cycle with every certificate PDF, named date-provider-hours.
3. Log hours the day you earn them in ASHA's CE Registry if your provider reports there.
4. Front-load mandated topics; they're the ones that are hard to find in the last month.
5. Spread hours across the interval — roughly one hour a month clears 30 with room to spare.
