Test-Day Anxiety Management for the Praxis 5331
Anxiety does not mean you are underprepared. Here is how to keep it from eating your working memory.
Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.
Test anxiety does not mean you are underprepared. It means your body is mobilizing. The goal on Praxis 5331 test day is not to eliminate the feeling — it is to keep it from consuming the working memory you need for clinical reasoning.
Use a physiological reset, not self-talk
Slow exhales are the fastest lever you have. Breathe in for four seconds and out for six to eight, for six cycles. A longer exhale than inhale shifts you toward parasympathetic activation within about a minute — far faster than trying to reason yourself calm.
Reappraise arousal instead of suppressing it
Research on test-taking shows that telling yourself "I'm excited, my body is getting ready" produces better performance than "calm down." The physical sensations of anxiety and readiness are nearly identical; the label you assign changes the outcome.
Have a plan for the blank-out moment
If you freeze on a question: flag it, take one slow breath, and move to the next item. Do not sit in the freeze. Answering two easy questions almost always restores fluency, and you can return to the flagged item with a working brain.
Reframe the hard block
Roughly 20 of the 132 questions are unscored pretest items, and every administration contains a run of questions that feel impossible. A hard stretch is not evidence you are failing — it is a normal feature of the exam. Candidates who pass and candidates who fail report the same experience.
Use the tutorial and the clock
The pre-exam tutorial screens are unscored time. Use them to breathe and settle rather than clicking through as fast as possible. During the exam, check the clock only at your planned checkpoints; continuous monitoring keeps arousal high for no benefit.
Stop scoring yourself mid-exam
You cannot estimate your scaled score from how the questions feel, and trying to do it while testing costs attention on the item in front of you. Judgment comes after; the only job during the exam is the current question.
