Praxis 5331 Test-Day Morning Routine
A rehearsed morning removes a dozen decisions and saves your attention for the exam.
Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.
A rehearsed test-day morning removes a dozen small decisions and keeps your attention for the exam. Here is a routine that works for most Praxis 5331 candidates.
Wake up at least three hours before your appointment
Cognitive performance climbs for a couple of hours after waking. If your exam is at 8:00 a.m., aim to be up by 5:30. If it is at 1:00 p.m., keep your normal wake time rather than sleeping in — a disrupted schedule costs more than the extra rest gains.
Eat a real breakfast with protein
Protein and complex carbohydrates hold steadier than sugar or a large coffee alone. The 5331 is 150 minutes of sustained reading; a blood-sugar crash at question 90 is a real and avoidable risk. Keep caffeine at your usual dose — test day is not the time to double it.
Do a five-minute activation, not a study session
Skim ten flashcards or one page of high-yield notes just to bring your brain online. Do not attempt a practice set. A missed question an hour before your exam will rattle your confidence with no time left to fix the gap.
Leave early enough to arrive 30 minutes ahead
ETS asks you to report 30 minutes before your appointment, and late arrivals are commonly denied admission with no refund. Build in traffic and parking time. Arriving early and sitting in your car calmly is a far better outcome than a rushed check-in.
Manage the waiting room
Other candidates will be talking about how much they studied. Do not engage — it is a reliable source of unnecessary anxiety. Put in headphones, breathe slowly (four seconds in, six seconds out), and review nothing.
The first five questions
Expect the opening items to feel harder than they are; that is adrenaline, not difficulty. Answer them at normal speed, trust your preparation, and let your pacing rhythm establish itself by question ten.
