The Night Before the Praxis 5331: What to Do (and Not Do)
Nothing you learn in the final twelve hours beats what bad sleep takes away. Here is the night-before plan.
Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.
The night before the Praxis 5331 is a logistics night, not a study night. Nothing you learn in the final twelve hours will outweigh what poor sleep takes away from your working memory and reading speed.
Stop studying by early evening
Cap your review at 30 minutes and finish before dinner. Late cramming raises anxiety, delays sleep onset, and creates the feeling of not knowing enough — which is the worst mental state to carry into a clinical reasoning exam.
Pack your bag
- Your valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID — name matching your registration exactly.
- Your ETS admission ticket or confirmation email, printed if you prefer.
- Water and a snack for the locker or your car.
- A layer — test centers run cold.
- Nothing else you would be upset about storing in a locker.
Confirm the logistics
Re-read your confirmation for the exact address, suite number, and reporting time. Some centers share a building with other businesses. Check drive time at the hour you will travel, not the current hour, and add 30 minutes of margin.
Eat and hydrate normally
This is not the night for an unfamiliar restaurant or a heavy meal. Hydrate through the evening but taper in the final two hours so you are not fighting a bathroom break during a timed section.
Wind down deliberately
Screens off an hour before bed, alarm set (plus a backup), clothes laid out. If your mind races, write your worries down on paper — externalizing them measurably shortens sleep onset. If you sleep badly anyway, do not catastrophize; a single poor night has a far smaller effect on performance than the belief that it ruined your chances.
Set the right expectation
You will not know every answer, and you do not need to. Passing requires 162 on a 100–200 scale, not perfection. Walking in expecting hard questions makes them feel normal instead of alarming.
