Praxis Path vs. Khan Academy: Can Free Cover the SLP 5331?

Khan Academy is free and world-class — but has zero SLP content. Here's what it can and can't do for your 5331 prep, and where Praxis Path fills the gap.

Written by The Praxis Path Editorial TeamLast verified

Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.

Khan Academy is the go-to free study platform for the MCAT, LSAT, and SAT — so it's a fair question whether it also covers the Praxis 5331. Short answer: no. Khan Academy has no SLP-specific content and no Praxis prep track at all. But its general-knowledge videos still get used by SLP grads for background review, so here's an honest look at what Khan Academy is actually useful for versus a purpose-built tool like Praxis Path.

Quick verdict

  • Use Khan Academy for free refreshers on statistics, research design, or basic anatomy concepts you forgot from undergrad.
  • Use Praxis Path for actual Praxis 5331 prep — because Khan Academy has zero SLP content, zero practice questions, and zero exam alignment.

What Khan Academy actually offers SLPs

Khan Academy doesn't have a Praxis 5331 course, an SLP category, or any speech- language content. What you can find there for background review:

  • Statistics & research design. Their statistics playlist covers standard deviation, standard error, confidence intervals, and reliability/validity — the stats concepts the 5331 tests in its Foundations category.
  • Basic anatomy. The MCAT prep track covers cranial nerves, the respiratory system, and neural pathways at an undergraduate level. Useful for a quick refresher, but you'll still need SLP-specific depth on the vocal tract and swallowing anatomy — see our cranial nerves cheat sheet.
  • Cognitive development. Their psychology videos cover Piaget, Vygotsky, and language development milestones at a survey level.

Where Khan Academy falls short for the Praxis 5331

  • No SLP scope of practice. The 5331's Foundations category tests ASHA ethics, IDEA, HIPAA, and scope-of-practice questions that only exist in SLP-specific study materials.
  • No clinical scenarios. The 5331 is scenario-based ("a 68-year-old presents with…"). Khan Academy teaches concepts, not clinical reasoning.
  • No practice questions in the right format. Their SAT and MCAT practice engines are excellent — but neither maps to Praxis 5331 items.
  • No dysphagia, aphasia, or motor speech content. The three highest- yield 5331 domains simply aren't on the platform.

The realistic study stack

If you're on a truly zero-dollar budget, Khan Academy plus free Praxis SLP resources plus the official ETS study companion can get you a partial content review. You'll still be missing scenario-style practice questions and a full-length mock — the two things that separate people who pass on the first try from those who don't.

For most grads, spending $49 on Praxis Path is cheaper than a single retake of the exam ($146) and buys you a 400+ question bank, timed mock, flashcards, and a bonus SLP anatomy coloring book. Use Khan Academy for the free stats refresher — use Praxis Path for the exam itself.

Our recommendation

Don't build your Praxis 5331 prep around a platform that doesn't cover the exam. Khan Academy is world-class for what it does — but it doesn't do the 5331. Use Praxis Path as your primary prep and lean on Khan Academy the same way you would a good YouTube channel: for a 20-minute refresher on a stats concept you can't remember. Pair it with our 8-week study plan and you'll walk in ready.
