What to Expect at the Praxis 5331 Test Center

Most test-day anxiety comes from not knowing the room. Here is the whole appointment, start to finish.

Written by The Praxis Path Editorial TeamLast verified Editorially reviewed

Cross-checked against the current ETS Praxis 5331 Speech-Language Pathology Test at a Glance and ASHA CCC-SLP standards.

Most Praxis 5331 anxiety comes from unfamiliarity with the room, not the questions. Here is exactly what a computer-delivered Praxis appointment looks like from the parking lot to the score screen.

Check-in (about 15–20 minutes)

You present your valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with a signature. Staff verify the name against your registration, take your photo, and have you sign in. Expect a security check — pockets emptied, sometimes a metal-detector wand — and a locker for everything you brought.

The testing room

A quiet room of individual carrels with partitions and a desktop computer. People around you are taking entirely different Praxis tests and will start and finish at different times. Chairs scrape, keyboards click, and proctors walk the room. Earplugs or noise-reducing headphones are usually available on request — ask at check-in rather than mid-exam.

Before the timer starts

You confirm your identity on screen, agree to the ETS testing policies, and click through a short tutorial covering navigation, flagging, and the review screen. This time is not deducted from your 150 minutes, so use it to breathe and settle.

During the exam

132 selected-response questions, 150 minutes, an on-screen countdown clock, and a review screen listing every item as answered, unanswered, or flagged. You may move freely forward and backward through the whole test. Scratch paper or an erasable booklet is provided; raise your hand if you need a replacement.

Breaks

There is no scheduled break in the 5331. You may raise your hand and leave for the restroom, but the clock keeps running. Plan hydration accordingly.

Finishing

After the last question you confirm submission and answer a brief background questionnaire, then an unofficial score typically appears on screen. You return your scratch paper, sign out, collect your belongings, and go.
