Praxis 5331 vs. Other Praxis Tests: Which One Do SLPs Actually Take?

If you're studying SLP and someone told you to "take the Praxis," they meant the Praxis 5331 — Speech-Language Pathology. But the Praxis brand covers 90+ separate exams that ETS uses for teacher and licensure testing, and the naming confuses just about every first-time candidate. Here's how the 5331 sits inside the wider Praxis family, and which tests you should ignore.

The one you need: Praxis 5331

Praxis Speech-Language Pathology (test code 5331) is the only ETS Praxis exam that satisfies the ASHA CCC-SLP examination requirement. All 50 states use it as the SLP licensure exam. Passing score: 162 on a 100–200 scale. Format: 132 selected-response items in 150 minutes. Fee: $146.

Similarly named tests that are not for licensure

Praxis 5372 — Communication Sciences and Disorders: Content Knowledge

The 5372 is a graduate-school admissions and program-outcome exam some university CSD departments use to benchmark student knowledge before or during a master's. It does not satisfy state SLP licensure or ASHA certification. If your program requires the 5372, take it — but don't confuse it with the 5331.

Praxis 5330 or 0330 — legacy SLP tests

The 5330 (computer-delivered) and 0330 (paper) were retired in 2014 and replaced by the 5331. Old prep books referencing "the 0330" are out of date — question style and content weighting shifted noticeably with the 5331. If a study guide was published before 2015, skip it.

Praxis Core (5713 / 5723 / 5733)

The Praxis Core tests (Reading, Writing, Mathematics) are a basic-skills gate for prospective classroom teachers in some states. Some school-based SLP tracks require Core before enrolling in education courses. Core does not replace the 5331 — it's a separate hoop for the teacher-certificate side of school-based practice.

Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT)

The PLT tests measure pedagogy for classroom teaching. School-based SLPs are exempt in most states because SLP is a related-services role, not a classroom teacher role. Check your state DOE — if PLT is required for your credential, it will be listed alongside the 5331, never in place of it.
