Praxis Core vs. Praxis 5331

"Praxis" is a family of tests, not one exam. The two that most often get confused by SLP candidates are the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators and the Praxis Speech-Language Pathology test (5331). Only one of them leads to your license.

The difference in one table's worth of facts

• Praxis Core (5713 reading, 5723 writing, 5733 math): a basic academic skills battery — reading comprehension, essay writing, and high-school-level math. Used as an entry screen for teacher-preparation programs.
• Praxis 5331: the subject assessment for speech-language pathology — 132 selected-response items over 150 minutes covering the ASHA scope of practice, scored 100–200 with a 162 qualifying score in nearly every state and for ASHA certification.

Do SLPs need Praxis Core?

Almost never. Praxis Core is aimed at undergraduates entering teacher preparation. Speech-language pathology is a master's-level clinical profession, and CAA-accredited programs admit on GPA, prerequisites, and application materials rather than Core scores. The exception is the narrow case where you are pursuing an education-issued speech-language credential through a teacher-preparation route, and the state uses Core as its basic-skills gate. Even then, Core does not replace the 5331 for licensure.

Why the mix-up happens

Both are ETS products, both are booked through the same ETS account, and both show up when you search "Praxis." Difficulty is not comparable

Core is a general-skills test — most graduate-level candidates pass it with light review. The 5331 is a domain-knowledge test that assumes a full master's curriculum: normative milestones, differential diagnosis, cranial nerve function, dysphagia management, standardized score interpretation, and ethics. Studying for one gives you nothing toward the other.

What to study for the 5331 instead

1. Work exam-format scenario questions rather than rereading notes; recognition is not recall under time pressure.
2. Track your accuracy by content domain and re-drill only the domains under about 70%.
3. Practice pacing at roughly 68 seconds per item so the last 20 questions are not a guess-fest.
4. Memorize the small set of high-yield facts that recur: developmental norms, cranial nerves, standard score conversions, and phase-specific swallowing signs.

Bottom line
