Phonological Processes & Ages of Suppression
Phonological processes are normal — until they persist. The suppression ages are what turn description into diagnosis.

Phonological processes are systematic sound-pattern simplifications that typically developing children use while their speech motor and phonological systems mature. They are normal — until they persist past the expected age of suppression. Knowing the suppression ages is what turns a description into a diagnosis.
Syllable structure processes
- Final consonant deletion — "cu" for cup. Suppressed by ~3;0.
- Unstressed (weak) syllable deletion — "nana" for banana. Suppressed by ~4;0.
- Cluster reduction — "poon" for spoon. Suppressed by ~4;0 (without /s/), ~5;0 (with /s/).
- Reduplication — "wawa" for water. Suppressed by ~3;0.
- Epenthesis — inserting a schwa: "buhlue" for blue.
Substitution processes
- Fronting (velar/palatal) — "tup" for cup. Suppressed by ~3;6.
- Backing — "gog" for dog. Never typical; a red flag at any age.
- Stopping — "tun" for sun. Varies by sound: /f, s/ by ~3;0; /v, z/ by ~3;6; "sh, ch, j" by ~4;6; voiced "th" by ~5;0; voiceless "th" by ~5;0.
- Gliding of liquids — "wabbit" for rabbit. Suppressed by ~5;0–6;0.
- Deaffrication — "ship" for chip. Suppressed by ~4;0.
- Vocalization — "pape-o" for paper. Suppressed by ~3;0.
Assimilation (harmony) processes
- Velar assimilation — "guck" for duck.
- Labial assimilation — "bub" for bug.
- Prevocalic voicing — "gup" for cup. Suppressed by ~3;0.
- Final consonant devoicing — "bat" for bad. Suppressed by ~3;0.
Articulation vs. phonological disorder
An articulation disorder is motor-based and sound-specific: distortions and substitutions on a small set of phonemes (a lateral /s/, a derhotic /r/). A phonological disorder is linguistically based and pattern-based: whole classes of sounds behave the same way. The distinction drives treatment — articulation disorders get traditional motor-based drill (Van Riper hierarchy: isolation → syllables → words → phrases → sentences → conversation), phonological disorders get pattern-level approaches.
Phonological treatment approaches
- Minimal pairs — contrast the error and target that differ by one feature ("key/tea") to establish the phonemic contrast.
- Maximal oppositions — contrast sounds differing by many features, used for children with small phonemic inventories.
- Multiple oppositions — for phoneme collapse, where one sound substitutes for many.
- Complexity approach — teaching later-developing, more complex targets (clusters, affricates) to trigger broader system-wide change.
- Cycles approach — for highly unintelligible children; target one process per cycle for a set period regardless of mastery, then rotate, relying on repeated exposure over multiple cycles.
- Core vocabulary — for inconsistent speech disorder, drilling a set of functionally important words to consistency.
Target selection and stimulability
Traditional developmental logic selects early-developing, stimulable sounds for quick wins. Complexity logic selects non-stimulable, later-developing targets for broader generalization. Both appear as defensible answers on exams — read the vignette for the child's intelligibility, age, and inventory size before choosing. Also weigh functional impact: sounds in the child's name and high-frequency words matter.
Intelligibility benchmarks
A useful rule of thumb for unfamiliar listeners: about 50% intelligible at age 2, 75% at age 3, and near 100% at age 4. Percentage of consonants correct (PCC) provides a severity metric from a connected speech sample. Always distinguish a motor planning disorder from a phonological one before selecting an approach — the treatments do not transfer.
