The Cycles Approach: Structure, Dose & Candidacy
Cycles does not drill a sound to mastery. It stimulates emerging patterns in waves, the way phonology actually develops.

The Cycles Approach, developed by Barbara Hodson, is built for one specific child: the highly unintelligible preschooler with extensive omissions, a small phonetic inventory, and many active phonological patterns. It does not aim for mastery of a sound before moving on. It aims to stimulate emerging patterns repeatedly over time, the way typical phonological development actually unfolds — gradually, in overlapping waves.
The core idea
Each phonological pattern gets a short block of time — typically 60 minutes per pattern per cycle, spread over one to two weeks — and then you move on whether or not the child has mastered it. When the cycle ends, you start again with the same or newly emerging patterns. Change appears across cycles, not within a session. Most children who fit the profile need three to six cycles, often 30 to 40 total hours, before intelligibility shifts noticeably.
Candidacy
- Highly unintelligible, usually a preschooler or early school-age child
- Extensive omissions (final consonant deletion, cluster reduction, syllable deletion)
- Restricted consonant inventory and restricted syllable shapes
- Adequate stimulability with cueing on at least some target patterns
Poor fits: the child with one or two residual distortions (use a motor hierarchy), or the child whose errors are inconsistent, groping, and prosodically odd (screen for childhood apraxia of speech).
Selecting targets
Target patterns, not individual phonemes, and address the earliest-developing deficient patterns first. A common priority order:
- Syllableness (two- and three-syllable word shapes)
- Word-initial and word-final singleton consonants
- Anterior/posterior contrasts — velars if fronting is present, alveolars if backing is
- /s/ clusters (word-initial and word-final)
- Liquids /l/ and /r/, usually stimulated rather than mastered in early cycles
Within a pattern, choose two to five target words per session using phonemes the child can produce with cueing, and avoid words containing the child's most difficult competing sounds.
The session structure
Hodson's session sequence is fixed, and exam items sometimes ask you to order it:
- Review the prior session's word cards.
- Auditory bombardment — about 30 seconds to two minutes of slightly amplified listening to 12 to 20 words containing the target pattern. The child listens; the child does not repeat.
- Target word cards — the child draws or picks pictures for the day's words.
- Production practice play — experiential play with 100 percent accurate production, achieved through modeling, tactile cues, and immediate correction. Accuracy during the block is non-negotiable; you engineer success.
- Stimulability probing for next session's targets.
- Metaphonological activity — rhyming, sound identification, phonological awareness.
- Repeat auditory bombardment.
- Home program — the caregiver reads the bombardment list once daily and practices the word cards for about two minutes.
Why it works when drill does not
Three mechanisms do the work: dense auditory input builds an accurate underlying representation, guaranteed accurate practice establishes the motor pattern without rehearsing errors, and cycling prevents the plateau that comes from grinding one phoneme to criterion. Because the approach cycles back, a pattern that was barely emerging in cycle one often stabilizes on its own by cycle three without direct drill.
Measuring progress
Do not chart percent accuracy on target words — the design guarantees high accuracy in session. Instead track intelligibility in connected speech, the percentage of consonants correct in a sample, the number of active patterns, and expansion of the phonetic inventory across cycles. Re-evaluate the pattern list at the end of every cycle and drop patterns that have reached about 60 percent accuracy in spontaneous speech.
Cycles versus minimal pairs versus complexity
- Cycles: many patterns, severe unintelligibility, omissions, preschool.
- Minimal pairs: one or two consistent processes, mild to moderate severity, child who benefits from communicative-breakdown feedback.
- Complexity / maximal oppositions: very restricted inventory where broad system-wide generalization is the goal and the child tolerates hard targets.

Typical items: identify the correct candidate profile for cycles, order the session components, recognize that auditory bombardment is listening-only, and know that targets rotate on a schedule rather than on a mastery criterion. A frequent distractor is "continue until 90 percent accuracy before changing targets" — that is the traditional hierarchy, not cycles.
