Praxis 5331 vs. NES: Which Exam Do SLPs Actually Need?

Two national testing programs sit between speech-language pathologists and their credentials: ETS's Praxis series and Pearson's NES (National Evaluation Series). They are not interchangeable, and for the overwhelming majority of SLPs only one of them matters.

The short answer

The Praxis Speech-Language Pathology test (5331) is the exam ASHA accepts for the CCC-SLP and the exam nearly every state licensure board requires. The NES Speech-Language Pathology assessment exists as a state-adopted educator test in a small number of jurisdictions, and it is used for school credentialing, not ASHA certification. If you plan to hold the CCC-SLP, you take the 5331 — regardless of whether your state also accepts NES.

Why some states list both

School-based SLPs in some states hold two separate credentials: a state health-board license (or a license waiver) and a department-of-education teaching credential. The licensure side is where the Praxis 5331 lives. The education-credential side is where a state may substitute its own adopted test. Which one should you take?

1. Confirm your state board's licensure requirement first — check your state's SLP license requirements. It will almost always name the Praxis 5331 and a qualifying score of 162.
2. If you intend to work in schools, check the department of education separately. If it requires an NES or state-specific educator test, that is in addition to, not instead of, the 5331.
3. If you want ASHA certification — and you should, because it drives reciprocity and pay — the 5331 is mandatory. There is no NES pathway to the CCC-SLP.

Does prepping for one prepare you for the other?

Largely yes on content, no on format. Both draw from the same nine ASHA big-nine areas: articulation and phonology, fluency, voice and resonance, receptive and expressive language, hearing, swallowing, cognitive-communication, social communication, and AAC. A candidate who can reliably answer 5331-style scenario items will be well prepared for content questions on any educator equivalent. What differs is the wrapper — item counts, time limits, scaled score ranges, and how heavily school procedure is tested.

The 5331 is $146 and delivered at Prometric centers or at home with remote proctoring, with four free score recipients at registration.
