The CSDCAS Application, Step by Step

CSDCAS is the centralized application service most communication sciences and disorders master's programs use. You enter your information once, and it is distributed to every participating program you designate. It is straightforward — and it is also where most applicants lose time, because verification is slow and the coursework entry section is unforgiving.

The five sections

1. Personal Information. Biographic data, contact details, citizenship, and background questions. Ten minutes.
2. Academic History. The long one. Every institution attended, official transcripts sent directly to CSDCAS, and manual entry of every course, term, credit, and grade exactly as printed on the transcript. Budget three to five hours and do it in one sitting with your transcripts open.
3. Supporting Information. Experiences (clinical, research, volunteer, employment), achievements, licenses, and your evaluators (letters of recommendation).
4. Program Materials. Program-specific questions, supplemental essays, and document uploads. This varies enormously by program — check every one.
5. Submit and pay. Fees are per program, on top of a base fee.

Verification is the real deadline

After you submit, CSDCAS verifies your application: staff compare your entered coursework against your official transcripts and calculate standardized GPAs. This takes roughly two to four weeks and gets slower as deadlines approach. Programs review verified applications.

Practical rule: submit at least four to six weeks before your earliest deadline. A single mistyped grade can send your file back for correction and reset the clock.

Transcripts: the most common failure point

• Order from every institution — including dual enrollment in high school, a single summer course at a community college, and study abroad.
• Order six weeks before your deadline. CSDCAS counts the receipt date, not the request date.
• Use the exact transcript request form or electronic delivery option CSDCAS specifies; a transcript mailed to the wrong address is not "sent."
• Foreign coursework generally requires a separate credential evaluation. Start that first — it can take a month or more.

Coursework entry rules that catch people

• Enter the course title as printed, not the version you remember.
• Every attempt counts, including withdrawals, repeats, and failed courses. Omissions found during verification are treated as errors and can be treated as misrepresentation.
• Convert quarter hours only if instructed; CSDCAS handles standardization.
• List in-progress and planned coursework in the appropriate section — this is how programs see your remaining prerequisites.

Letters of recommendation

Most programs want three. The standard mix is two academic (ideally CSD faculty) and one clinical or professional supervisor. In CSDCAS you enter evaluators' names and emails, and the system requests letters directly.

Give each writer, in one email:

• Your resume or CV.
• Your draft personal statement.
• The program list with deadlines.
• Two or three specific reminders of your work with them — a project, a grade, a clinical moment.

Ask six to eight weeks out. Follow up at two weeks and one week before the deadline. Your application is incomplete until the final letter arrives, regardless of when you submitted.

The personal statement

CSDCAS uses a general prompt; many programs add their own supplemental essay. What works:

• Open with a specific clinical or personal observation, not "I have always loved helping people."
• Show that you know what the job actually involves — caseloads, documentation, IEPs or productivity, interdisciplinary teams.
• Name a population or setting you are drawn to and why, then connect it to something in your record.
• For supplementals, name faculty, labs, clinics, and placements specific to that program.
• Address a weak GPA briefly and factually, or in an addendum — see the low-GPA guide.

Fees and fee assistance

Expect a base fee for the first program and a smaller per-program fee after that — a 10-program list realistically runs $500–$1,000. CSDCAS offers a fee assistance program for applicants demonstrating financial need; it has limited awards, it must be approved before you submit, and it opens with the cycle. Apply the week it opens if you qualify.

After you submit

• Check your CSDCAS status daily during verification. "Received — not verified" is normal; "Undelivered" or "Missing transcript" needs same-day action.
• Confirm whether each program also requires a separate institutional application. Several do, and CSDCAS will not tell you.
• Watch program portals for interview invitations, typically January–February.
• Update CSDCAS with fall grades where the Academic Update window is open.
