The Vermont SLP market
Vermont licenses Speech-Language Pathologists through the Office of Professional Regulation (OPR), with oversight from the Vermont Board of Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and Hearing Instrument Specialists. The state's small population means most SLPs work across school districts, the University of Vermont Medical Center network, and home-health agencies rather than large hospital systems. Vermont accepts Praxis 5331 at the ASHA-aligned 162 cut score, the same standard used across New England.

Vermont's OPR issues the clinical SLP license after review of transcripts from a CAA-accredited graduate program, Praxis 5331 scores, and supervised clinical experience documentation. School-based SLPs additionally need an educator license endorsement in speech-language pathology from the Vermont Agency of Education, which is coordinated separately from OPR licensure.
Because Vermont has relatively few graduate programs of its own, many licensees complete their degrees out of state and transfer credentials in; OPR's application process is built around verifying out-of-state transcripts and ASHA certification alongside Praxis scores.
Graduates apply to OPR for a temporary license to begin the Clinical Fellowship under a Vermont-licensed CCC-SLP supervisor, following the standard nine-month ASHA CF structure. Given Vermont's small number of practicing SLPs, many fellows complete their CF through the University of Vermont Medical Center, home-health agencies, or a supervising district's contracted therapy provider.
Once the CF is complete and the CF-2 form is submitted, OPR upgrades the temporary license to a full, unrestricted Vermont SLP license. Fellows working across the border in New Hampshire or New York during their CF should confirm supervision hours meet Vermont's documentation requirements as well.
Public schools account for a large share of Vermont SLP jobs, with supervisory unions and school districts across Chittenden, Washington, and Rutland counties routinely posting openings. The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington is the state's largest hospital-based employer of medical SLPs, handling dysphagia and voice caseloads for the surrounding region.
Rural counties in the Northeast Kingdom and southern Vermont often depend on traveling contractors, teletherapy providers, and home-health agencies to cover caseloads, since it can be difficult for small districts to recruit a full-time SLP locally.
Vermont OPR renews SLP licenses on a two-year cycle and requires continuing education hours relevant to speech-language pathology practice as a condition of renewal. Licensees should keep certificates of completion on file since OPR audits a portion of renewals each cycle.
SLPs holding the Agency of Education endorsement must also track any separate professional development or relicensure requirements tied to their educator license, which follows the Agency of Education's own renewal schedule rather than OPR's.

Submit fingerprints and a background check
Standard across all state boards. Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks and must be completed before the license is issued.
Apply to the state licensing board
Send your Praxis score (ETS score report), transcripts, CF verification, and background clearance to the state board. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam on state SLP practice law.
