Every US state — including Oregon — accepts the Praxis 5331 at the ASHA-set 162 cut score for SLP licensure. There is no separate state-specific SLP Praxis exam.

Oregon's board issues a Conditional License valid during the Clinical Fellowship and a full license upon CF completion. Praxis 5331 at 162 is required, and school-based SLPs additionally pursue the TSPC Communication Disorders Specialist license.

The Oregon SLP market
Oregon licenses Speech-Language Pathologists through the Oregon Health Licensing Office's Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The state's SLP job market is centered on Portland, Salem, and Eugene, with growing demand in Bend and other parts of Central and Eastern Oregon that historically struggled to recruit clinicians. Praxis 5331 at the ASHA-aligned 162 cut score is required statewide.

Passing score note: Oregon accepts the standard ASHA-set 162 passing score on Praxis 5331; there is no separate or higher Oregon-specific cut score.
The Oregon Health Licensing Office issues the state SLP license required for practice in medical and private-practice settings, based on a CAA-accredited master's degree, documented clinical hours, and a passing Praxis 5331 score. The application includes a background check processed through the state licensing system.
SLPs working in Oregon public schools also need a license from the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC), which issues an SLP license through its educator licensure system. The same Praxis 5331 score satisfies the exam requirement for the TSPC license, but the application, fees, and fingerprinting are separate from the health licensing office process.
Oregon issues a Speech-Language Pathologist Fellowship license that allows a new graduate to complete the nine-month Clinical Fellowship under an Oregon-licensed CCC-SLP supervisor. The fellowship license must remain active throughout the CF, and applicants should submit renewal paperwork promptly if the fellowship period extends beyond the initial license term.
After completing CF requirements, fellows submit final documentation to the Health Licensing Office to convert to a full, unrestricted license. TSPC-licensed school SLPs completing a fellowship in a school setting must also coordinate their supervision documentation with TSPC's separate requirements.
Public schools employ a substantial share of Oregon SLPs, with Portland Public Schools, Salem-Keizer School District, and Beaverton School District among the largest employers in the state. Central and Eastern Oregon districts frequently rely on telepractice or traveling contract SLPs to fill positions in more remote communities.
Medical SLP roles are concentrated at OHSU and Legacy Health in Portland and PeaceHealth and Salem Health elsewhere in the Willamette Valley, covering dysphagia, voice, and cognitive-communication therapy. Private pediatric clinics and early-intervention agencies are also well established across the Portland metro area.
Oregon SLP licenses renew on a biennial cycle through the Health Licensing Office, requiring a renewal fee and documentation of completed continuing education hours, most of which can be earned through ASHA-approved coursework and conferences.
SLPs who also hold the TSPC school license must renew that credential separately according to Oregon's educator licensure renewal schedule, which may require additional professional development hours beyond what the health licensing office requires.

Do Oregon school SLPs need a license from a different agency than the health board?
Yes. School-based SLPs need a license from the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission in addition to the Health Licensing Office license, both based on the same Praxis 5331 score.

The Speech-Language Pathology Praxis (5331) is the single national exam accepted by all state boards. 162 is the ASHA-set passing score and every state uses that same cut score.
Complete a Clinical Fellowship (CF)
A 36-week (9-month full-time equivalent) mentored clinical experience under a licensed CCC-SLP. Some states use their own name for it (California calls it the RPE) but the requirement is functionally equivalent.
Submit fingerprints and a background check
Standard across all state boards. Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks and must be completed before the license is issued.
Apply to the state licensing board
Send your Praxis score (ETS score report), transcripts, CF verification, and background clearance to the state board. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam on state SLP practice law.
