Every US state — including New Jersey — accepts the Praxis 5331 at the ASHA-set 162 cut score for SLP licensure. There is no separate state-specific SLP Praxis exam.
Licensing board
New Jersey's SLP license is issued by the Division of Consumer Affairs on the recommendation of the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Committee. Praxis 5331 at 162 is required, and school-based SLPs additionally hold the NJDOE Speech-Language Specialist certificate rather than a teacher-of-the-handicapped credential.

The New Jersey SLP market
New Jersey licenses Speech-Language Pathologists through the New Jersey State Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Advisory Committee, which operates under the Division of Consumer Affairs. New Jersey school-based SLPs additionally need a certificate from the New Jersey Department of Education, and the state's dense suburban districts and hospital systems around New York City and Philadelphia support strong statewide demand.

The New Jersey State Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Advisory Committee, under the Division of Consumer Affairs, issues the clinical license required for hospitals, clinics, and private practice. Applicants must verify a CAA-accredited graduate degree, supervised clinical hours, and a passing Praxis 5331 score.
SLPs working in New Jersey public schools also need certification from the New Jersey Department of Education, in addition to the clinical license. New Jersey's dense network of suburban school districts means many SLPs pursue both credentials simultaneously right out of graduate school.
New graduates apply for a temporary license to complete the nine-month Clinical Fellowship under a licensed CCC-SLP supervisor. The temporary license must be renewed if the CF extends beyond its initial term, and supervisors must hold an active, unrestricted New Jersey license.
After completing the CF and submitting CF-2 documentation, the board issues a full license. Major hospital systems in Newark, New Brunswick, and Camden are common CF placement sites for candidates pursuing medical specialization.
New Jersey's hundreds of local school districts collectively employ a large share of the state's SLP workforce, with especially strong demand in Bergen, Essex, and Middlesex counties. Hospital systems including RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, and Cooper University Health Care employ SLPs across dysphagia, voice, and pediatric feeding specialties.
Private practice is well developed in the northern and central parts of the state, where proximity to both New York City and Philadelphia supports higher private-pay rates. Early intervention programs also employ a significant number of New Jersey SLPs serving infants and toddlers statewide.
New Jersey SLP licenses renew every two years through the Division of Consumer Affairs, with continuing education hours required through ASHA CEUs or board-approved coursework. Renewal is handled through the state's online licensing portal.
School-based SLPs holding a Department of Education certificate must separately maintain that credential according to New Jersey's educator certification renewal requirements, which run independently of the clinical license's two-year cycle.

The Speech-Language Pathology Praxis (5331) is the single national exam accepted by all state boards. 162 is the ASHA-set passing score and every state uses that same cut score.
Complete a Clinical Fellowship (CF)
A 36-week (9-month full-time equivalent) mentored clinical experience under a licensed CCC-SLP. Some states use their own name for it (California calls it the RPE) but the requirement is functionally equivalent.
Submit fingerprints and a background check
Standard across all state boards. Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks and must be completed before the license is issued.
Apply to the state licensing board
Send your Praxis score (ETS score report), transcripts, CF verification, and background clearance to the state board. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam on state SLP practice law.
