Every US state — including Montana — accepts the Praxis 5331 at the ASHA-set 162 cut score for SLP licensure. There is no separate state-specific SLP Praxis exam.
Licensing board
Montana's board operates under the Business Standards Division and offers a provisional Clinical Fellowship license. The 162 Praxis 5331 minimum is enforced, and licensure by endorsement is available for CCC-SLP holders from another state.

The Montana SLP market
Montana licenses Speech-Language Pathologists through the Montana Board of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, housed within the Department of Labor and Industry. Montana's vast rural geography means many SLPs practice via telepractice to reach schools and clinics in sparsely populated counties, and the state's small number of hiring hubs means most jobs cluster around Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, and Bozeman.

Passing score note: Montana accepts the ASHA-set 162 passing score on Praxis 5331, with no state-specific cut score or additional exam.
The Montana Board of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists issues the clinical license required for hospitals, clinics, and private practice. Applicants must verify a CAA-accredited graduate degree, supervised clinical hours, and a passing Praxis 5331 score.
SLPs working in Montana public schools also need endorsement through the Office of Public Instruction, which reviews similar academic credentials but issues a separate teaching-related certificate. Because Montana has only one in-state graduate program, many school districts recruit heavily from out-of-state programs and support relocation costs.
New graduates apply for a provisional license to begin the nine-month Clinical Fellowship under a licensed CCC-SLP supervisor. Given Montana's rural geography, the board permits telepractice-based supervision arrangements when in-person supervision isn't practical, provided documentation requirements are met.
After completing the CF and submitting CF-2 paperwork, the board issues a full license. Many Montana Clinical Fellows complete their CF in one of the state's regional hospital systems or through school-based telepractice contracts.
A large share of Montana's SLP workforce serves public schools, many of which rely on telepractice contracts to reach rural and frontier districts without an on-site SLP. Billings Clinic and Benefis Health System in Great Falls are major hospital-based employers for medical SLPs, along with St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.
Montana's Indian Health Service facilities and tribal health programs also employ SLPs to serve reservation communities, often through contract or telepractice arrangements. Private practice options are concentrated in the larger cities of Missoula, Billings, and Bozeman.
Montana SLP licenses renew every two years through the Department of Labor and Industry, with continuing education hours required through ASHA CEUs or board-approved coursework. The board periodically audits continuing education records at renewal.
School-based SLPs holding Office of Public Instruction endorsement must also renew that credential on Montana's educator licensure cycle, separate from the clinical board's two-year renewal timeline.

The Speech-Language Pathology Praxis (5331) is the single national exam accepted by all state boards. 162 is the ASHA-set passing score and every state uses that same cut score.
Complete a Clinical Fellowship (CF)
A 36-week (9-month full-time equivalent) mentored clinical experience under a licensed CCC-SLP. Some states use their own name for it (California calls it the RPE) but the requirement is functionally equivalent.
Submit fingerprints and a background check
Standard across all state boards. Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks and must be completed before the license is issued.
Apply to the state licensing board
Send your Praxis score (ETS score report), transcripts, CF verification, and background clearance to the state board. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam on state SLP practice law.
