How transcription is actually tested on the Praxis 5331

You will not be asked to transcribe a live audio sample. Praxis 5331 transcription items are printed: the stem gives you a target word and a child's production written in IPA, and you decide what process or error the transcription represents, or you pick the transcription that matches a described production. That means the skill being scored is reading IPA accurately and mapping symbols to articulatory descriptions — not fast phonetic ear-training.

Because of that, the highest-return preparation is symbol fluency for the sounds that show up in disordered speech: the interdentals /θ ð/, the postalveolars /ʃ ʒ tʃ dʒ/, the velar nasal /ŋ/, the glottal stop /ʔ/, the rhotic vowels /ɚ ɝ/, and the lax vowels /ɪ ɛ æ ʊ ʌ/. Nearly every transcription item on the exam uses one of these, because they are the sounds children distort, substitute, or delete.

Diacritics appear less often, but two are worth knowing cold: the nasalization tilde over a vowel (hypernasal resonance items) and the dentalization bridge (frontal lisp items). If a stem shows a diacritic, it is usually the entire point of the question.

Place, manner, and voicing as an answer-elimination tool

Most transcription items can be solved by describing the target and the production in place-manner-voicing terms and comparing the two features that changed. If /s/ (alveolar, fricative, voiceless) becomes [θ] (interdental, fricative, voiceless), only place changed — that is a frontal substitution, not a stopping or a devoicing error. Answer options that name a manner change are then eliminable without any further reasoning.

This three-feature comparison also drives the phonological-process items that share a question pool with transcription. Fronting is a place change, stopping is a manner change, prevocalic voicing is a voicing change, and cluster reduction is a syllable-structure change. Training yourself to label the changed feature first turns a memory question into a two-step deduction.

Broad vs. narrow transcription and when each is appropriate

Broad (phonemic) transcription, written in slashes, records which phonemes the speaker intended. Narrow (phonetic) transcription, written in brackets with diacritics, records how those phonemes were actually produced. ETS tests the distinction most often in assessment-planning items: if a scenario asks how to document a child's distorted /r/ or a lateralized /s/, the correct answer involves narrow transcription, because a broad transcription would record the sound as correct.

The practical rule for the exam: use broad transcription to describe a phoneme inventory or a substitution pattern, and narrow transcription to describe distortion, nasalization, aspiration, or timing. Answer choices that propose broad transcription for a distortion problem are distractors.
